As a member of the Communications team supporting Planning and Public Works you will be responsible for creating and implementing customer engagement strategies and campaigns for the Transportation Division of Planning and Public Works. This work will include managing communications for high-profile transportation projects, including the ferry system, and creating fact sheets, presentations, and other communications assets designed to inform, educate, or gain acceptance by the public.

This position helps tell the story of Pierce County Planning and Public Works and our work to engage the community in projects and services that directly affect their daily life.

How to be Successful in the Role:

We are looking for a talented strategic communicator with the knowledge and skills to inform the public, media, and partner organizations about programs, services, and projects in Pierce County. You will play a vital role in developing, implementing and managing communications plans, as well as responding to emerging issues on both transportation projects and the ferry system as they arise.

An employee in this role uses well-developed communication skills in designing, marketing, presenting and or explaining a variety of concepts and topics to various audiences. The Communications Specialist must be skilled at working with others to make recommendations on communication strategies as well as working independently to develop educational and promotional campaigns.

Your Future in this Role:

The Communications leadership and County departments you support will work together to provide you real-time training opportunities alongside other experienced teammates. You will have additional training/educational opportunities through the Civic Plus publishing platform, the Communications Department, and LinkedIn Learning.

Position Summary:

  • Provide strategic advice and communication support to the Pierce County Planning and Public Works Department, Office of the County Engineer.
  • Identify and analyze issues of concern and emerging trends; develop strategic communication objectives, techniques and plans.
  • Work as a project manager, including developing plans and schedules for implementation and evaluation of communications plans and strategies.
  • Background in media relations.
  • Experience in crisis communications response.
  • Create and contribute content to the county’s internet and intranet sites.
  • Publicize projects and programs through website development, news writing, and events.
  • Comfortable working in a matrixed organization.

Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, journalism, or closely related field AND
  • 3-5 years of related professional communications experience, including web management/development experience, is required.
  • Additional education or experience which clearly indicates the ability to perform the essential functions of this position may substitute on a year for year basis
