Reporting to the CFAES Director of Agricultural Operations, the research specialist/manager is responsible for coordinating management and administrative functions of the CFAES North Central and Muck Crops Agricultural Research Stations located at Fremont and Willard, Ohio. Addresses field research topics of interest to local growers, producers and stakeholders in collaboration with CFAES faculty, OSU Extension Educators and Field Specialists. Serves as a member of the CFAES Operations team working with a network of managers for CFAES farms, field labs, and research stations. Coordinates with other field stations regarding equipment, labor and other CFAES assets where required.

55% Management duties include supervision of field operations, allocation of field space and services to support investigator led research and extension programs. Hires, trains and supervises support staff. Supervises collection, summarization and transmission of research data and records to PIs. Coordinates and facilitates education programs/field days/workshops with OSU Extension personnel. Facilitates procurement of supplies and equipment; maintenance of facilities, equipment and grounds. Prepares reports on research station activity for CFAES administration. Manages budgets and cost recovery. Follows university policies and processes related to HR, purchasing, and environmental health and safety in managing research station operations.

25% The Research Specialist conducts independent applied field research of interest to local agricultural clientele to meet programmatic goals in alignment with existing research programs. Seeks external funding to sponsor field research activities. The position works collaboratively with CFAES faculty and OSU Extension professionals to advance research, OSU Extension and education programs.

20% Maintains effective and professional communications internally and externally. Facilitates interaction with local producer groups and clientele, advisory committees. Serves as a liaison for CFAES with area producers and stakeholders. Work may require adjusted schedule to meet peak workload demands. Position could be based at either Fremont or Willard, Ohio.

Required Experience

Education: Bachelor’s degree required. Preferred – Masters or Ph.D. in crop science (horticulture/agronomy), plant pathology, entomology, Natural Resources or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience: 3 years of relevant experience required. 4-8 years of relevant experience preferred that includes experience in field research methods, ability to implement experimental design, statistical analysis, and effective communication of research results to producers and clientele; excellent communication and collaboration skills required; experience in agricultural operations; ability to obtain Ohio Public Operator pesticide license within 6 months of employment. Driver’s license.

Desired Experience

Working knowledge of farm machinery operation and precision agriculture technology. Experience with vegetable crops and agronomic crops operations in a field research environment. Two years supervisory experience.
