LEAD FLUID SYSTEMS ENGINEER

 

Based out of Rocket Lab’s headquarters in Long Beach, CA the Lead Fluid Systems Engineer is responsible for critical Neutron vehicle & facility fluid systems from conceptual design through build and launch. You will lead the Fluid Systems team and deliver functional vehicle and ground systems required to operate Neutron.

 

WHAT YOU’LL GET TO DO:

 

  • Guide a small team of fluid system experts through ongoing development of the Neutron program.
  • Serve as the technical expert for fluid systems in Neutron design discussions
  • Own critical fluid system designs, analysis and other technical details as needed to support the objectives of the team
  • Provide strategy on development plans including what hardware to build and how tests are performed in order to maximize the program’s available resources towards meaningful progress on Neutron
  • Perform trade studies and sizing – using hand-calcs, analytical models or test data – to define key elements of system architecture
  • Coordinate with vendors, manufacturing teams, and facilities groups to purchase and fabricate key subsystems
  • Plan and run critical system tests

 

YOU’LL BRING THESE QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering or related field
  • 5+ years’ experience designing, building and operating complex fluid systems (e.g., aircraft hydraulics, oil & gas processing facilities, aerospace test & launch sites, rocket fluid systems)
  • Knowledge of fundamentals in fluid dynamics and thermodynamics and fluid system design

 

THESE QUALIFICATIONS WOULD BE NICE TO HAVE:

 

  • 8+ years experience designing and operating complex fluid systems for liquid bipropellant launch vehicles
  • Previous experience with launch vehicle stage design
  • Experience with oxygen & methane systems
  • Advanced degree in a fluid mechanics-heavy field

 

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

 

  • Ability to travel and communicate outside of work hours
  • Must be able to work extended hours and/or weekends as needed
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus.
  • Regularly required to sit, use hands and fingers, operate computer keyboard and controls, and communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Must be physically able to commute to buildings
  • Occasional exposure to dust, fumes and moderate levels of noise.
