Reporting to the Senior Vice President, Global Strategic Alliances and Business Development, the VP of Business Development will play a critical role in developing a comprehensive business development strategy to orchestrate and drive new business, forge innovative partnerships and business opportunities, and expand and evolve our current and future revenue streams. This role will also serve to support key strategic alliance initiatives, including finalizing partnership agreements, ensuring adherence to post-deal integration terms and conditions, operations oversight, and monitoring the team’s delivery on key milestones and deliverables.

This leader must have a strong track record of strategy and business development experiences, and a demonstrated ability to assess risk, weigh rewards, and navigate the business landscape with foresight. Ability to excel in effective communication, adeptly resolve conflicts, and proactively devise mitigating solutions is essential for this position.

This leader needs to exhibit effective communication and confidence in articulating complex ideas succinctly, with clear goals, milestones, and deliverables that are in alignment and support the broader organization’s goals and objectives.

Responsibilities

 

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive business development strategy aligned with organizational imperatives, and identify and evaluate new market opportunities, including strategic partnerships, out-licensing agreements, collaborations, and other innovative business deals.
  • Lead high-stakes negotiations with key clients, investors, and industry luminaries, including cultivating, building, and developing relationships with C-suite executives, industry influencers, and key external stakeholders.
  • Oversee deal teams, ensuring they surpass revenue targets and embody the company’s corporate vision. Analyzing dynamic market trends, competitive landscapes, and evolving customer needs to develop strategic BD initiatives that are aligned to Novavax key business drivers.
  • Accountable for ensuring alliance teams adhere to key operating principles, and monitor adherence to legal, financial, and operational requirements. Support the alliance teams by proving strategic direction and oversight, monitor external factors that may impact the partnerships, and develop mitigation strategies and protect the organization’s revenue drivers.
  • Identify and evaluate potential strategic partners, negotiate agreements, facilitate due diligence processes, and lead post-deal integration. Draft and negotiate transaction term sheets utilizing creative deal structures and processes that result in business success and maximum value to the organization.
  • Actively participate in industry events, conferences, and networking opportunities to enhance Novavax’s visibility, reputation, and potential partnership opportunities.

 

Requirements

 

  • A minimum of 15 years post-graduate experience in the pharmaceutical industry is required.
  • Demonstrated track record of business development or related development of high-value business collaborations and partnerships
  • Experience in identifying, initiating, and closing on new business opportunities, licenses, co-development and/or partnerships within the pharmaceutical/biotech industry.
  • Proven track record in engaging and managing global alliances, and know-how of key alliance management principles, governance, and operations
  • Experience in negotiation principles, deal sheet development, understanding contract language, risk mitigation, and creative problem-solving.
  • Significant knowledge of drug discovery, development, tech ops/CMC and commercialization
  • Broad industry knowledge, vaccine experience preferred, and ability to understand key business drivers that are relevant to scouting new BD opportunities
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to effectively and confidently present complex business solutions to key stakeholders.
  • Experience leading high performing teams (direct and cross functional) with a demonstrated ability to work effectively in a collaborative, fast-paced, dynamic global environment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated business acumen

 

Educational

 

  • Bachelor’s degree required (science discipline preferred)
  • MBA, PhD or JD highly preferred.
