Structural Engineer

WORK LOCATION: Anchorage

SCHEDULE: This is an exempt level position that works an urban 40-hour week or compressed work week 9/80 schedule. Relocation benefits may apply.

Accountabilities and Specific Requirements:

Under general direction of the Engineering Standards Supervisor, the Structural Engineer is accountable for the following job role:

• Understand and provide direction on TAPS structural engineering design and operational questions.
• Review engineering designs and validate they are consistent with TAPS design basis and standards.
• Be the responsible individual on Alyeska seismic program and standards as appropriate.
• Represent Alyeska as the Seismic Engineering SME to internal and external stakeholders.
• Ability to operate independently and in a team environment and make sound engineering decisions and recommendations without the benefit of supporting resources.
• Identify problems affecting operations, recommend solutions and work with maintenance and projects to assure appropriate implementation.
• Solicit support from other engineering teams as needed. Ensure that scope of work for engineering support adequately describes the asset needs.
• Investigate equipment failures and submit root cause analysis reports.
• Prepare and complete limited scope design packages.
• Develop awareness of plant performance to spot trends, bottlenecks, and substandard equipment performance.
• Identify opportunities for improvement in reliability, efficiency, and safety.
• Propose and justify plant improvements on time to support a multi-year project cycle.
• Identify future major maintenance activities for the TAPS long range plan.
• Support strategic initiatives.
• Support facility start-ups / shutdowns and other unusual operations including final field review of engineered changes for startup.
• Establish and maintain technical operating parameters and design basis.

MINIUMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Applicant must meet or exceed these minimum job requirements to apply for this position.

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil/Structural Engineering or a related Engineering discipline
• Four years’ experience as a civil/structural, operations, or maintenance engineer
• Strong knowledge of fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures of Structural Engineering, with emphasis on seismic design and earthquake engineering aspects
• Strong knowledge of engineering concepts, codes, practices, and procedures within discipline area
• Demonstrated experience in structural design.
• Strong written and oral communication skills including the ability to present complex technical concepts to a non-technical audience.

PREFERENCES:

• Master of Science in Civil or Structural Engineering
• Eight (8) years of related work experience in the application of structural engineering principles for the design, construction, maintenance, and repair of petrochemical physical infrastructure, including piping supports, modules, or buildings.
• Technical problem solving, data management, trend analysis and troubleshooting skills without need of direct supervision.
• Trans Alaska Pipeline System experience
• Knowledge and application of ASCE, ASTM, ACI, AISC, and API codes and standards
• Proficient in finite element analysis (FEA) design software such as STAAD or RISA.
• Practical experience with advanced seismic design topics including existing building evaluation, retrofit design, and dynamic analysis.
• Knowledge and application of earthquake preparedness programs, including seismic design control as well as earthquake response and contingency planning.
• Ability to work independently and to perform successfully in a team environment.
• Experience performing and/or managing maintenance and construction projects in arctic and sub-arctic environments.
• Ability to coordinate and interact professionally with Operations, Maintenance, Projects and engineering contractors.
• Registered Professional Engineer
